Chapter Twenty-Seven
Lorenzo
My brain felt numb; probably a combination of the freezing cold and the fact that I almost frickinâ died.
Would have died, were it not for the fact that Isabella completely ignored my instructionsâagainâand saved me. As we walked north back up Chicago Avenue, holding our shivering bodies close to one another, I couldnât decide if I was grateful or angry over what she did.
I decided the anger would keep me warmer. âYou shouldnât have followed me.â
âYouâre⦠welcomeâ¦â she said as her teeth rattled.
âIâm serious. You gotta let me protect you.â
âWould be hard for you to protect me⦠if you were dead at the bottom of the river.â
That was a good point, I figured. Still, I needed her to understand how dire things were. âThis whole fiasco will be for nothing if anyone sees you. Then youâll be in danger again. Just promise youâll start listening to me.â
âOnly if⦠you hear me out⦠Weâre in this together, right?â
She had a point. I didnât give her the satisfaction of saying it, though. Instead, I focused on the first order of business: survival.
âWeâre gonna freeze to death if we donât get outta these wet clothes. And, no, that ainât a come-on.â
âI saw a thrift store on my way down here. Itâs not too far away.â
The cold seemed to inhibit our ability to take anything more than baby steps. Nevertheless, we made it before either of us turned into a popsicle.
We went around back to an employee entrance. I picked the lock with some tools I had that, thankfully, hadnât washed away during my âswimâ. I prayed there wouldnât be an alarm.
Every now and again, the odds go my way. I opened the door, and no bells sounded.
We grabbed the first clothes we saw and started using them to dry ourselves off. The place had a bathroom with an electric hand dryer. We took turns putting our heads under the hot air.
I took some new duds off the rack, transferred my weapons and, of course, my dice. I grabbed the heaviest winter coat I could find and put it on even though we were still inside.
Then it was time to outfit Isabella. She was standing in the middle of the store, wearing two long, downy coats. She looked like a giant marshmallow. I noticed her wet clothes discarded beside her. Including her drenched underwear. I tried not to think about the fact that she was naked beneath the coats.
âWe gotta get you a disguise,â I told her.
âAre you kidding me?â
âYou donât want to stay locked up in the safehouse, right? If youâre going out in public, you canât do it looking like you.â
She did a sweep of the store, grabbed some stuff, and headed into a changing room. She re-emerged a few minutes later in knee-high boots, wide-legged black and white pinstriped slacks, and a tight gray turtleneck sweater. I think I preferred her bohemian artist look better. But she still looked great in this chic, professional outfit.
I guessed she was still cold because, without her bra on, I could see her pert nipples poking through the sweater material.
